Marion County, Florida. There are bad days…and there are really bad days.
Some may not consider it good luck when a passenger jet filled with infected people explodes over the property occupied by Gladstone Specialists, raining zombies and zombie parts.
But it was a very lucky day for the men that work for John Gladstone, and their families, as well. They learn rather quickly that John is a Weapon of Mass Destruction on zombie asshats, whose sole intention is to protect his thirteen-year-old daughter, Hannah.
John Gladstone and his crew become trapped at John’s business when the world falls to the mysterious Outbreak two days after the Fourth of July – and they get some excellent hands-on training on how to put the infected into the ground where they belong.
John and his crew are military historians, working primarily for the film industry, so when the infected pouring in from the freeway begin to pile onto their fence, John’s crew fight back with flamethrowers and home-built flail tanks. And to John’s great surprise, Hannah teaches him how to make napalm. She also convinces him to use her teen friends as his flame crew…all of those years playing video games will finally be put to good use.
John also discovers a weakness in the infected – they are extremely sensitive to ground vibrations, and he proves this theory using a geological survey vehicle – also known as a thumper truck.
John and his crew join forces with what’s left of the military, facing off an enemy that doesn’t need training, transportation or weapons. The infected are puppets of the pathogen, their only desire is to mindlessly pass on the infection by biting. The president, his staff mostly dead, comes up with a plan, putting OPERATION PIED PIPER into motion.
The purpose of OPERATION PIED PIPER?
Seal off the state of Florida and take it back from the infected, using the thumper trucks to draw the contaminated people in. They simply need to build forty Abrams flail tanks, and a two-hundred mile long barrier at the north end of the state.
All while millions of infected people are homing in on the living like heat-seeking missiles.
What could possibly go wrong?

Damn, I almost deleted this book. I am so glad I passed the first chapter. This book is so good (5 stars) I could NOT put it down. These characters are awesome and Siohban was exceptional. This is an uplifting Z apocalypse.
Definitely not your typical Zombie story. Once I started, I couldn't stop reading. At first glance the introduction of the story line was questionable. But as the book progressed, I found myself totally engaged. Love the ingenuity of this book, unlike the typical Zombie plot which involves lots of guns. The means and ways they dealt with the Zombies was amazing!
John, an owner of a company specializing in military movie props, to simplify it, is working around his awesome base (with a nice fence) when zombies start raining from the sky. He will do anything to protect his family. Once his family is mostly safe, he basically gets drafted into ordering around the military.
This is a really good book! It isn't meant to be taken seriously, it is dripping comedy that got me giggling. Sadly, Shortwinter caters to military gurus who are also great with mechanics and weaponry. I understand most, thanks to my country/tomboy/military background, but all of the mechanics left the story a bit dry about halfway through, but I loved FOBAZ girl and Derek.
Don't like how every girl is pretty guys are cute. The Chinese & Japanese girls only cook & serve or hand out beers. John's girlfriend is super model quality blah blah.. All of the people around John are the best at what they do right away. Its a good story.. but the history of the cars. & details about them is boring. For being so much of a thinker John doesn't think ahead about dangerous people. He was told a man & a lady beat an old man. He goes after the man & the lady who is the actual crazy leader is allowed to leave. Chauvinist thinking again. He need sons.

I gave this book the high ranking because it was consistently entertaining and full of action. You almost wished that you were there to be a. part of the action. This would make for a great movie or mini series.
I am sitting here just full of adrenaline from reading this amazing zombie story. Yes, some of the characters are over the top, but that is what makes it fun to read. I, for one, cannot wait until the next book.
